Here's a forgotten gem of a record , an exhilarating shambolic concert from toulouse in 78... its everything you'd expect and more.. highlight for me a very loose, free wheelin' version of sonja ..which threatens to unravel at every bar but never does.
Its a wonderful band this time round with the likes of Evan Parker (whom ive always particularly enjoyed playing with these guys)Mike Osbourne ..potent as always , Charig , Beckett ...OTHER THAN THE CENTRAL comitee COMPRISED OF THE USUAL SUSPECTS... (read BLUE NOTES).
One can't even concieve of pomp- Meister Malfatti playing on this kind of material these days... a pity ..because he is so hot here!!
This may not be up to par interms of todays live recording standards( its at about the level of a good contemporary bootleg)..but what an electrifying performance.
still out of circulation(never been reissued to cd) ..perhaps it's murkiness has something to do with that.

Great to see you continuing to post great music, sotise. I'm not quite sure why Ogun doesn't re-release BoB material like this. Perhaps they don't own the rights anymore, because they have great material from most of the band members here: http://www.cadillacjazz.co.uk/code/ogncat.html

Interesting that the photo on the back cover shows 3 altoists - left to right Osborne, Pukwana and "mystery man". Perhaps Ray Warleigh ? Not mentioned in the credits.

It is indeed Elton Dean. I do have this record and I'm particular partial to the side-long piece on the b-side. The contents compensate for the low-to-middling sound quality.

hi sotise, you're reading my mind. i was looking for this album on the net for over 4 years... in the past i had very good contact with ogun - i demonstrated several their lp's on radio in poland, but i had never received this particular record... many thanks for professional scans - i noticed at once elton dean on the cover (had no doubts it's dean) and i knew he played with them quite often... i still have bob "live in willisau" on vinyl from my ogun days... as a great fan of sun ra and this kind of big band free music i was looking for similar kind of bands in europe - and i found only two examples : brotherhood of breath and willem breuker kollektief... the more music from both bands the better...

Thanx for this one. I used to have all the BOB Ogun lp's but that was a long time ago on the other side of the world. Just as a sideline I used to go to the Bracknell Jazz festival every year (late 70's- mid 80's) and Lol Coxhill was the compere every year which was worth the admission price on its own!

Thanks. This is brilliant! Was Johnny Dyani really playing here? I know he very rarely played with the brotherhood - apparently he was suspicious of the whole endeavour for some reason... Maybe cause Chris tried to organise something similar before and it went under? Who knows.
In any case it's a great pity that we can't hear more of him with them - or even better, more of him AND Miller together, since he's easily my favourite bassist and definately one of the greatest we've had, and Harry... he wasn't too bad himself was he? :)

Sonia - First heard it on 'In the townships' is one of the most powerful songs to hear, 'specially if you happen to be from South Africa. Mongs... damn. And nobody knows who he or any of his collegues are. Come down to his own country and ask anyone here if they've even heard of him let alone listened to the music... The cream sinks to beneath the underdog, the scum rises to the top. Thank god we've still got this beautiful music!
As someone who was lucky to have seen THE Brotherhood live (and I am still sitting on a bad recording I made at The Roundhouse) as well as seeing them individually, I just find that last comment so fugn SAD!!!

Huge thanks, Sotise. At last I will hear this extremely promising looking album - I simply love all earlier BoB records and was looking for Procession for such a long time. By coincidence, just downloaded today final BoB recording with Shepp prom Inconstant Sol and then use captain crawl search engine in hope to find something long wanted... I would also like to contribute something, got vinyl rips of Elton Dean's Bologna Tape and Welcomet albums, as well as few other his non CD releases, so will try in next weeks, as i am relatively new in blogland. Also I am very curious about first Louis' Viva La Black album. Long Live Ogun & Brotherhood!
