Another facet revealed of the interests and abilities of the wonderful French pianist and bandleader François Tusques. Le Cabaret de la Dernière Chance from 1982 - purely solo piano throughout.
And traditional 'jazz' playing at that.
As evidenced by the earlier Tusques record on this blog as well as the "L'intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra" albums - there were plenty more strings to Tusques' bow than just free-jazz abstractionism.
That his 'free-jazz abstractionism' is vital listening is beyond doubt - if you *don't have* 'Free Jazz' (1965) 'Intercommunal Music' (1971), and 'Le Nouveaux Jazz' (1967) - go get them now from http://inconstantsol.blogspot.com (still thanks to Pierre & Boromir for those venerable posts ).
This is much more straightforward - but throughout guided by a strong sense of feeling and identity.
A couple of live tracks, and music sounding quixotic, contemplative, virtuosic, muscular, tender, satirical, folksy, and even boppish. (The thoughtful 'down-tempo' version of Mingus' 'Fables of Faubus' here, I really like.)

In a different space and time, it would be François Tusques, not George Winston, who made a million from a tune like 'Echos de Bretagne'. . .
