Bobby Few-coming thru, 1977 (seb lp 01) Flac

A beautifully eccentric, and fairly rare solo record by the great Bobby Few, an underrated pianist , who moved to Paris in the late 60's after working and recording with the Likes of Booker Ervin...

Few is best known as the pianist in the 70'S collective centre of the world quartet, fronted by Frank wright , who were as it happens also pioneers, recording
releasing and distributing their own records , first on centre of the world ,and then the sun label.

Sadly distribution was fairly limited ,at the time those two great labels existed , and re-issue has not been forth coming for most of these glorious records .
and.. they remain extravagantly expensive collectors items.

Few was also in Steve Lacy's marvellous sextet ..for about a decade.

This is an oddly fragmented, record .. with Few singing on the first piece ,girls girls girls .
The lyrics might almost be a beach boys parody.

This whole album , for me
brings to mind anothner great eccentric , be-bop era veteran , Jimmy Rowles( also a great pianist) with a penchant for almost flippant irony , delivered in an unhurried laid back style.

Many thanks to our music buddy and benefactor Pierre for sharing this

with us.... a test pressing no less!!

an after-thought- one of my very favourite Few performances is on 'the flame' a

phenomenal Lacy trio record on 'soul note 'from 1983.... check that out if you have an opportunity!

ENJOY!!

Dear Sotise,
Thank you for the music...
Since I do not have a premium account in rs, I can not dl the file due to its size. It says than since the file is larger than 200 MB I should have a prmium account or the owner of this file may carry the downloading cost by making use of "TrafficShare".
So if you can do me a favor, I will be happy.
Thank you once again,
volkan

Thank you, Pierre, and thank you, sotise. I've been searching for an unnamed solo Bobby Few track for a long while and haven't found it yet. Perhaps it's here. Whether it is or not, I'm grateful for the chance to hear this.

Thanks sotise & Pierre, not least for making this available for the non-Premium folks. I'm always happy to post mp3 distillations for folks who need it, but I can't do that until I can get at the files in the first place.

Bobby Few is such a wonderful weirdo. Absolutely singular. He just seems to approach every playing situation with an open mind & no agenda beyond contributing to the music at hand. I imagine he'd be a great musician to have a beer with: not just the stories from playing with Frank Wright, Steve Lacy, etc., but the way he seems to move so comfortably from one register to another. You'd never be bored.

I 2nd the recommendation for *The Flame*. Great record that Soul Note (or whoever owns them now) just put out again.

Papa Frita ,Volcans an old friend ... i cant make ewverything a free traffic share DL for EVERYBODY , i had to pay for 5 gig of TS , if you are a free RS user you ought not to have problems with the Tusques because its less than 200 meg,

ZERO , Theres only one other Few solo album that i know of , but im no expert on his work, im sure Pierre or Kinabalu would be able to confirm whether thats all there are...
hope you find that track , you might consider posting it, suirely someone could identify it.
keep well

Freddy hi , hope all is well sorry i havent got back to you at that other place , i sent you a message a few weeks ago but lost it because my connection cut out.... dsl still going through phone lines in this neck of the woods... and this is the season of ferocious devestrating winds!

1009, YES Few is amazing , a pity he doesn't record more frequently , very versatile ... brilliant , if you click on that google link his Home address is published , someone ought to write to him telling him he's amazing!! and appreciated.

Sotise, about the other place, no problem. Thanks for the explanations anyway. Did you get this series of concerts by the AACM Great Black Music Ensemble in Italy, at the other place ? I heard fantastic excerpts, great vocal parts notably.

SOTISE said...

HEY ALL ...anyone willing to upload 'francois tusques le piano prepare' to another filehost for Papa frita, say megaupload or media fire ... i dont have much sucsess with uploading to those hosts...that is the only reason i use rapidshare!

please ..somebody?... 90 people have dld it ,surely someone is willing .

serviceton said...

Can someone please explain the RapidShare 200MB thing to me ?

Clearly, I blinked and missed it

If it means you MUST be a RS member to get (our/other) blog's files, then I would suggest that this sucks.

SOTISE said...

S... it means that if a file is over 200 meg , you can only acsess it if you are either a premium user , or have a collectors account ... now you know why people still split thier archives in bits of 100 meg...

in my case i really couldnt give a toss about rapid points , it takes me a year to make enough points to get a free month anyway.

when i first started uploading files , they were ( and still are) the easiest to use... ive tried MEGAUPLOAD, Mediafire ... etc .. its the same deal very slow uploads that cant be resumed...

i cant download from some of them let alone upload ... sendspace is a case in point ...useless downloads are only available here early in the morning ... and cut out half way through more oftern than not... i guess they are designed for super fast broadband.

This was the first Few solo (Sun SEB 001, 1977). Then came "Continental Jazz Express" (Vogue VG 405, 1979) and then "Rhapsody in Few" (Black Lion 65 111, recorded in 1983, though no date of release is given on the record). This was solo, except the first track which featured the old trio with Silva and Ali. Center of the World vol. 7 Solos & Duets (SR 103, no release date given) has two solo Few pieces on side 1. Before that, there was the "More or less Few" (CW 003, no release date given), with the trio and a couple of duos with Silva on "Solos Duets" (Sun SR 102, recorded at various dates in 1975).

Bobby Few is still active and I've got some more recent concert recordings that I might upload at some point. And a number of cd releases from the 90s onwards which I haven't checked out yet.

There is a video circulating with Few in the Steve Lacy group (mid-80s) worth seeking out, also for the interview sections with Lacy.

kinabalu said...

You can also split the files in chunks between 100 and 200 mb to reduce the number of downloads and still be under the 200 mb ceiling for free users. I do that regularly and so does Riccardo over at IS, I've noticed.

most enticing of all theres a recent duet with S.Simmons, a double disc available from sonny's website..i think it will be my next purchase!

serviceton said...

Hmm, yes - an enticing release there.. Round Midnight, Night in Tunisia, Body & Soul...(!!) Just been listening to Few playing Mingus -Orange Was the Color.. Love the way he *digs hard* into older repertoire

kinabalu, do you know how many of the titles you describe are 'out in blogland somewhere' ? (More or Less Few I know about) - but the others?..

serviceton said...

Few used to have a website, but it looks like it may have gone...
These recordings http://www.avramfefer.com/discography.html with Avram Fefer are worth mentioning, and hearing. And you can type Bobby Few into youtube and see some good clips too..

serviceton,

no idea. Frankly, I haven't looked, because I own copies of all those I've mentioned, so I suppose, no need to ...
