Steve Lacy- Stamps, (1979 hat Hut double lp k/l)

Here's a very favourite Lacy lp ,from what i consider to be his peak period, the Late 70's...this and Capers are probably among his most accomplished viscerally raw albums of the time.
Perhaps its no coincidence that both were recorded in concert ,and poorly engineered that was pretty much standard practice ,at Hat Hut in its infancy.

This record Cooks Hard and relentlessly , featuring Irene Aebi's voice on only one track, a Great version of 'Existence' one of Lacy's finer confections... i have to say i have gradually become a fan of her slightly off kilter and sometimes downright out of tune singing... this is one of her finer performances. richly delivered..with warmth and passion.

Every track is a winner, a fine synthesis of Lacy's then current interests , the perfect blend of his Whole tone dominated monk inflected tunes ,and total all out Free improvisation...

INTENSE!!!

the original production on this record ... was nothing to write home about , fairly monochromatic at times , my guess is that's why it hasn't been reissued to date.

my LP bought in an op shop for a few bucks ,was fairly pervasively crackly NOT TO MENTION THE HAIRLINE SCRATCHES!!! , with one small skip on the first track ...MOST OF THESE PROBLEMS APPEAR FIXED....

I've used Magix, to refresh the rip that includINGGG, removing some of the applausSSSSSe.. ALL THE MUSIC IS INTACT AND TO MY EARS..SOUNDING GOOD.

HOPE YOU
ENJOY!!

Thanks very much for this one, sotise. It was on my (unarticulated) wish list. For some reason I thought it had been released on cd, maybe as part of a different album (thinking of *Prospectus* maybe), but now I see that it has not. My favorite era of Lacy!

Wow. I've only seen this record once before in my life. I actually miss the original HatHut covers-they are a lot more interesting than the photos with yellow-orange lettering. I even miss the tough cardboard sleeves. Oh yeah, music. Thanks once again! I've been on a big Mal Waldron kick, so obviously this fits in by association.

Also, speaking of late 70's Lacy, I think Raps, which is a relatively easy LP (with a garish cover) to come by, is a neglected album. Mr. Potts needs more respect.

This is terrific, Lacy is always appreciated. Thanks!

Great album! And by the way, great blog, always full of surprises, matching so often with my moment mood.. Got the chance, not so long ago to find three Lacy's albums on hat hut, this one plus "clinkers" and "herbe de l'oubli", all three lp's still sealed in a second hand store in Brussels. Such a day of luck. But today's luck are your posts!
All the best

Sealed ? SecondHand Store? Brussels? My sincere and heartfelt envy goes out to you . I went to Brussels once, unlike you B.R. , NOT scoring a bargain - I sat on La Grand Place and had a coffee that cost EUR72.50.
Well, not exactly - but it *was* expensive (it was Belgian Francs back then) . I enjoyed the city very much. Fewer bureaucrats then too I think....

sotise, thanks for this - have enjoyed it more than the Lacy that I posted (!) It *ain't* a hi-fi listen, but must have been very much worse before your clean-up job - so 'gracias!' for putting in the effort.
As you wrote, everyone's pretty much cooking hard here - to great musical effect.

Should I post Capers ? thanks again!

Newk said...

serviceton: Could you please post Capers? I asked for the unabridged version of Capers & Quirks a while back, which Pablo posted, but then upon unpacking my CDs, I realized that I no longer have the albums themselves. Perhaps it's a bad sign when you forget what you do or don't have?
B.R. reminds me of the old days when I lived in an area no where near as beautiful nor interesting as Brussels where I used to find sealed Braxtons and Black Saint releases in dollar bins. I used to wonder how those records got there in the first place, if nobody in the area dug em.

Thank you!

hey newk - I ripped Capers & Quirks from CD and uploaded - but you actually are after the *LP Version* of Capers - that right ? In which case, I will disappoint you I'm afraid - don't have the LP set.....
:o(

..oh - and Yes Steve Potts DOES deserve way more than the critical "summary" he's typically given

hello,

thank you for all the rarities. any chance of a share for "Distant Voices"?

thx

thanks for Stamps, which I've never heard before. Like Newk I really enjoy Raps, where Steve Potts plays really well on one of his earlier appearances on disc with Lacy. I look forward to this one, from about the same time.

Despite not being exactly what Newk (or anyone) requested, I DID rip the Hat CD of "New York Capers & Quirks" [TRIO w/ Lacy, Ronnie Boykins, Dennis Charles], and put it up to Rapidshare, before realising that the LP ('unedited') is what was being requested...
Seems a shame to let it go to waste.
If anyone would like the CD version - here it is in FLAC

i started a comment in the Shots department. so i will just make it a two fare. reading those comments i looked below and i've seen Shorts. not the same thing. but looks like your alliteration Short-Stamps-Shots works very well. :-). thanks for the cover art work and the effort to to post the large file size. especially that i was looking at the Andrew Cyrille one too, your package gives the feeling of having the album/LP in ones hand. i'm not sure if i commented already on this site (side-site-size). great stuff. many thanks. and yes, these days, gray is the new black!

Sotise:

Thank you very much for 'stamps' and also thanks to the poster who shared 'capers'. While I have been a follower of inconstant sol for some time now I somehow missed 9 grey chairs. I have added it to the bloglist at my own site and see that I have quite a lot of catching up to do!

I would also like to put in a word of appreciation for the jacket design of the original Hat Hut LPs. They take me back quite viscerally to a time in my life where I had access to a friend's collection of those beautiful big cardboard packages --- I think that Hat Hut's CD design aesthetic is classic as well --- I guess I'm just greedy: I'd like to have all the Lacys and Braxtons and the rest in both packages!

And of course, the L8 GR8 Oliver Johnson is even more severely underestimated than Steve Potts. Ask ANYONE with ears who lived in Paris from 1970 > 2000 who was THE most happening drummer in town…

My father said me that this kind of music was really good, I have on album!

By the way, thank you very much for uploading this great album. I had been looking for this.

Regarding the fourth track "Stamps/ duckles", sound of the begning part is distorted and interrupted. Is original LP like this?
